Username ideas
Tap a name to copy it. The icon on the right opens it on Instagram: if the profile does not exist, the name is free.
Instagram has two names, and they are not the same.
The username is your @: it appears in the URL, it is unique across the whole platform, and it is what people type to find you. It only allows letters, numbers, periods and underscores, up to 30 characters.
The display name is the bold text above your bio. It can repeat, it allows spaces, accents and capitals, and Instagram searches it alongside the username. This tool generates the first one, which is the hard part: the display name you can write however you like.
The rules Instagram does not spell out.
- 1Thirty characters maximum. The good ones usually land between 8 and 16.
- 2Letters without accents, numbers, periods and underscores only. No spaces.
- 3It cannot start or end with a period, and cannot contain two periods in a row.
- 4You can change it whenever you want, but doing so releases the old one and someone can take it within minutes.
- 5If you change your username, every old link pointing to your profile stops working.
How to choose well.
It should survive being said out loud
If you have to spell out an underscore and two periods every time someone asks for your Instagram, the name is wrong. The real test is saying it aloud.
No random numbers
An 07 or a 2024 on the end screams backup account. If your choice is taken, change the word rather than adding digits.
Consistent across your other platforms
The same handle on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube is worth more than three pretty but different names. Check all three before deciding.
It should outlive a change of topic
If you post vegan recipes today and call yourself veganrecipes, that name limits you two years from now. A name tied to you lasts longer than one tied to a niche.
If the name you want is taken.
Before giving up and adding numbers, try this order: swap the separator (period for underscore), add a short word from your topic, put an article in front, or use the singular or plural version. If none of that works, the base word is probably too generic and you are better off finding another.
Frequently asked questions.
Not directly. Instagram does not allow availability lookups from outside without privileged access, and any site claiming to do it in real time is simplifying the truth. What we do is give you a direct link to the profile: if Instagram shows the page does not exist, the name is free.
Up to 30. In practice the ones that work well stay between 8 and 16 characters, because those are the ones people remember and can type without mistakes.
Not in the username. Only unaccented letters, numbers, periods and underscores are allowed. In the display name, the bold one, you can use accents, capitals and spaces.
It does not affect reach or the algorithm, but it does break every old link pointing at your profile, and it releases your previous name for someone else to take. If you have traffic arriving from external links, think it through first.
Yes. They are combinations generated from your word, not registered names. Check they are free on Instagram and that they do not clash with an existing trademark before using them.
No, and we would rather say so. It is a combination algorithm running in your own browser. For generating usernames it gives the same results as a language model, without sending your data to any server.
